Having finished the H.G. Wells book, I'm reading Life on the Screen by Sherry Turkle when I should be working on class projects:
...in the daily practice of many computer users, windows have become a powerful metaphor for thinking about the self as a multiple, distributed system. The self is no longer simply playing different roles in different settings at different times.... The life practice of windows is that of a decentered self that exists in many worlds and plays many roles at the same time.
We all break ourselves into different parts to some extent, yeah? I certainly have since I started MUCKing, and my horoscope says as much. Though, since I'm so cuspy, I've been informed I'm actually a Gemini--so I read both, which is another multiplicity, and I'm fine with that.
