Writer and director of More Mark Osborne says, in the interview after the film:
When he thinks about his invention, and when he gets inspired, it fuels this fire, it fuels this passion, and I was really excited when I came to it because I realized it that it played a really important role in finishing the goggles. He finally finishes the invention and has that motivation to do it and turns the invention into everything he hated and ends up kind of containing the vicious cycle in their society and kind of throws into question what exactly his success is.
The machine lets the man out for a while, and he escapes its clutches, but the society machine just folds him back in, taking what was so important about him in the first place.
