Giants make better chemists, relatively, since they can't use physical processes to (for example) mine as much precious metal as we had to, to bring about the Industrial Revolution. They have to use chemical processes, or limit what they can mine to large pockets--which I suppose we did and do, because that's cheaper. So maybe it's not that big a difference.
