My Christmas music CD

I suppose it's a little late to post this now, but here's the playlist for the CD of Christmas music I gave Joshua, and personally grooved to the entire day he was to receive it, and to selections from which I am currently grooving. The first part is the totally rawking section:

  • Suzy Snowflake by Soul Coughing.
  • Winter Wonderland by Fleming & John, a CD of whom Josh gave me a while back.
  • Frosty the Snowman by Man... or Astroman? It has a nice little intro with Santa reading a strange request, probably from some B-movie like most of their songs' quotes.
  • Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses, not the Jewish-themed cover by Save Ferris.
  • Everything's Gonna Be Cool This Christmas by Eels. This song features as an aside the line that could title this disc: "Baby Jesus, born to rock."
  • Let It Snow by Luscious Jackson. A pretty standard, upbeat version of the song.

Then comes the punk section. This part is liiikely inappropriate for groups of mixed squareness/hipitude.

  • Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight) by The Ramones.
  • Nothing's Going to Ruin My Holiday by The Vandals.
  • Thanx for Nothing by The Vandals. Angry, with cursing. w00t.
  • Mele Kalikimaka by Reel Big Fish. This track ends with some goofy NC-17 noisemaking.
  • Oi to the World by No Doubt. I picked this over the Vandals' version simply because I like Gwen Stefani's voice better.

Lastly is the swing/quiet section:

  • God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, a fairly swingin' cover by Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan, those zany Canadians.
  • Christmastime by Aimee Mann and Michael Penn.
  • Santa Baby by Eartha Kitt, a nicely lo-fi version.
  • A Johnny Ace Christmas by Squirrel Nut Zippers, appropriate for both swing and quiet sections.
  • Toyland by R.E.M.
  • Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Tori Amos.
  • Listen, the Snow is Falling by Galaxie 500. This almost eight minute track is mostly haunting guitar that really gets the feeling across.
