I wrote on the radio-dev list the other day:
I confess my hands are trained to always use the context menu if I want to open a link in a new tab. My #1 desired feature for Mozilla is some way to turn off opening a link in a new window when invoking the link normally (ie, ignore "target" attributes), but that's another kettle of fish entirely.
Sylvain was nice enough to humor a poor Anglophone when responding:
Well, control-clicking a link that is targeted to a new window will instead open it in a new tab (if mozilla is configured to open ctrl-clicked items in a new tab, edit - preferences - tabbed browsing - middle click or control click of link in a web page, it also helps to turn on "load links in the background").
This discussion started by talking about Radio's aggregator, I always ctrl-click on a post link, in fact I now almost ALWAYS ctrl-click on a link whenever I am in Mozilla, wich is WAY too often.
Quite! Most of my following links is also opening them in new tabs. I'm happy to report my hands have taken to middle clicking quite eagerly in the couple of days since I wrote that message. I did have Load links in the background on--I even had K-Meleon's option to load new windows in the background on when I used K-Meleon--but now I have the satisfaction of another tab appearing and loading without so much as a menu in the way.
Also, this may expose why I'm livid when a single-clicked link opens in a new window: I know very well how to open links in new windows; that I single clicked is an intentional request to open it in the same window and tab. I'm pissed when the computer disobeys by direct command just because the author thought he knew better.
Anyhow, a mouse with a pleasantly clickable wheel is now in my list of must-haves. I'm lucky enough to already have one, I think a Logitech MouseMan+, but I'll see how my translates to the mice in the campus labs Wednesday.
