UTC bans incoming yahoo.com email

Subject: yahoo.com email blacklisted for spam

Please note: Email from @yahoo.com has been "blacklisted" by the anti-spam organizations that UTC uses to block spam. This means email sent from @yahoo.com addresses is being automatically blocked by UTC's email system. This may affect students and others who use Yahoo for email.

An easy workaround is for students (and others) to use UTC's own OneNet email system at http://onenet.utc.edu/ to send email.

Thanks,
Richard

This is really ridiculous. Maybe they need to get a new spam filter! They must have put a lot of thought into that decision. It really sounds like they were thinking about all those parents who use yahoo e-mail to keep in touch with their kids. Brilliant!

very time I start hearing “no, really, Chattanooga’s starting to change”, I see another report of some high profile institution in Chattanooga doing the boneheaded thing. I too went through a brief period where I blacklisted “hotmail.com” addresses. That was probably 5 or 6 years ago, and ended a few hours later, as soon as I realized that, duh, most of those return addresses were forged anyway, and there were easier ways to catch most of that.

Sounds like someone in systems doesn’t have a backbone and someone in the administration doesn’t have a clue.
