Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom made both Amazon's and Chapters/Indigo's editors' picks for 2003 science fiction novels. "Also, it's only three recommendations short of making the preliminary Nebula ballot...."
Update: Down and Out has also been named #5 best novel of 2003 by Entertainment Weekly, and a "New and Notable" paperback in the 28 December New York Times. It's also mentioned in the Creative Commons year retrospective Flash movie (though, Doctorow admits, with some error).
