Losing oil

So I'm driving down the freeway yesterday and notice this regular pattern of shiny oil splotches ahead of me, one for each of the regular rhythmic thumps in the pavement (not that I was going fast enough to feel the rhythmic part). They were almost shaped like teeth, two splotches widening until they meet at the top, then end. Slowly and steadily they got bigger, becoming more like the oily silhouette of a Venn diagram. Then they stop, with no sign of a catastrophic halt or lane change or any other scenario I could make up.

What could have happened? Was the pavement somehow smooth enough there that there wasn't enough force to bump oil out anymore?

Could have easily been something other than oil. Something like power steering fluid wouldn’t cause the car to stop and its loss likely wouldn’t even be noticed until you started turning off of the freeway.
