California driving

This morning I got to notice how, while if I leave for the train station at 7:15, driving up 87 in morning traffic, I don't get there 'til 7:45, if I leave at 7:05 (at least, on a dreary Friday), I get there at 7:15.

There've been plenty of times since moving to California that I've been in danger from erratic drivers, and I'm still learning that 87 × 280 merge where I have to merge right into the middle lane for the Santa Clara St/Julian St exit, and I remember the panic-stricken times I was cutting the gas level too close trying to drive home at two in the morning when the gas stations in San Mateo were long closed. What's fascinating is how traffic interacts with time and what I can do to get to the station comfortably early with marginal commute traffic stress.

It all seems trivial today.
